How to Measure a Room

How to Measure a Room: Step by Step

Getting the measurements right is the first step to choosing flooring that not only looks amazing but also fits your space perfectly. Use this simple guide and note everything on a quick sketch.

1. Sketch a basic floor plan

Draw the outline of your room from above. Keep it simple and mark features like doorways, windows, fireplaces, alcoves, or built-in cupboards.

2. Measure the longest and widest points

Use a tape measure to record the maximum length and width from wall to wall. Check more than one spot, walls can be uneven in older homes. Write all measurements directly onto your sketch.

3. Measure the awkward areas

Include bays, chimney breasts, alcoves, recesses, drop-backs, split levels, and steps. Measure into any doorways where flooring will continue and record those widths.

4. Double-check your measurements

Before you put the tape away, go back over each dimension and confirm accuracy. Clearly label every number on your sketch. It is easy to miss a corner or mix up a figure, checking now avoids hassle and extra cost later.

5. Add wastage

Add 10% to the total area for cutting and matching, then round up to the nearest full box when you order.

Quick example

If your room is 4.2 m by 3.6 m: area = 4.2 × 3.6 = 15.12 m². Add 10% = 1.512 m², total 16.632 m², round up to the next full box size.
